How to write a great resume
Before we begin, let’s start with some pretty basic, but important questions:
“What is a resume?” A resume is really only three things:
- A tool to get you an interview, not to get you hired
- About where you want to go, not where you have been
- A chance to share a snapshot of what you accomplished for your former employers … not about your job descriptions.

A resume is not …
- A complete history of your career from beginning to today Why?
Job Hunt Secrets
Secret #1: The more you focus on what you want, the FASTER you’ll get hired!
If you do only one thing differently in your hunt for a new job, do this one thing: sit down and figure out, clearly and concisely, what you want. And commit it to paper. Once you do that, every aspect of your job hunt will become easier. The very best part? You will get a job you love. Aim high, focus on your target and you will be amazed at what will start to come your way.
Secret #2: Your 30-second commercial is more important than your resume.
If you cannot tell people what you want, in a language they can understand, then you are setting yourself up for a very difficult job hunt. You need to demonstrate that you have these three things: the skills, the passion and the desire to do the job. Keep your message simple, keep it memorable, and keep it on point with what you want.
Secret #3: You need to network
70-80% of people find their new jobs through networking, so you need to spend 70-80% of your time networking. Start with people you know. With a clear picture of what you want, and a focus on expanding your network, it will quickly start to blossom.
Secret #4: Networking is easy, if you help first, and ask second
The more you help, the more you shall receive. Most people are so worried about how to network, or how to ask for help, that they usually forget to offer help. Even if you are unemployed, there is almost always something you can help someone else with. So go see what you can do to help the people you are meeting with, and watch what wonderful connections and job leads come back to you.
Secret #5: Positive out = positive in.
The power of positive thinking is undeniable. Unfortunately, so is the power of negative thinking. “I can’t get a job” is a self-fulfilling prophecy. So stop thinking it. Stop telling people that. Go find a safe place to vent and talk about how hard your job hunt is, on your bad days. Do NOT go to a networking meeting and announce “Hi, I’ve been out of work for 6 months and I really need your help; I can’t find a job.” Unfortunately, it will only hurt you. Find your happy place (your favorite music, a picture of your kids, yoga, cartoons) to help you get your giggle on, and go out and tell the world what makes you great.
